And so it begins.
nights in the 20's, holiday decorations popping up like weeds, Christmas music on the radio.
Give us one good NW wind and some lake effect clouds and we will be head long into winter.

Life is chaos - sprinkled with a treat here and there to keep us sane.
Snapped this pic from the parking lot leaving work the other night. Was a subdued, yet beautiful sunset. But seeing the subtle cloud structure in B&W in my head, I knew there would be something special here.
My treat for the day.

“Certain is it that there is no kind of affection so purely angelic as of a father to a daughter. In love to our wives there is desire; to our sons, ambition; but to our daughters there is something which there are no words to express.”
~ Joseph Addison
I took my 2 girls out chasing the sunset with me tonight. There is a park along the lake where we used to take them as toddlers. They called this their "special lake". They still do, though a bit of the mystery has grown out of them.
It was a wonderful evening with just me and my girls. If you teach your children anything, teach them a sense of wonder and enthusiasm. Just because something happens everyday, doesn't make it any less wondrous.

Somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd grade I recall making my first watercolor painting. It was on a high grain paper and my art teacher taught us how to build a red/orange sky with a lot of water and barely any paint.
Then when it dried, we used India Ink (jet black) to draw silhouettes of bare trees over the sky backdrop.
I remember how amazing that painting came out. Well, for me anyway. I was rather young.
I have always been drawn toward recreating that feeling with the camera. Never had much luck. I recall how I couldn't wait for it to dry so I started with my ink too soon. It bled off the branches in these odd and delicate little patterns. By the time I was done it was far too black. Didn't matter to me though. It was my first painting.
Couldn't help but think of that tonight chasing the sunset and shooting through the tangle mess of these November trees.
It was a good night.

Because of DST, I am now leaving work right about peak sunset time.
Of course, this means my commute time has been extended to accommodate for all of the side of the road photography. :-)
This photo was taken from the driveway at work. Handheld & nearly straight from the camera. :-) (ISO 100 - 1/400s - f8 - 96mm)
3rd straight night of beautiful sunsets.

Its very dark now, very early. The breezes today had a distinct November bite to them. Nearly every leaf on every tree lies brown and wind blown in piles on the ground.
The month of snow has arrived :-)

“What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.”
~ Crowfoot
So comes an end to October. We have been treated with some AMAZING sunsets lately. But I have sooo many sunset shots. Sometimes its more interesting to see things within the sky that you wouldn't normally notice.

I can think of nothing so appropriate today than a capture (again 15ft from the office door) in the midst of never-ending chaos hiding under the cloak of disorder.
Time for the weekend.

Found exactly 8 feet from the office door. It never ceases to amaze and intrigue me, the worlds that can be found exactly 11 cm away with a super macro lens.
That concludes my 2pm sanity break for today :-)

I finished off the mystery roll in my Lubitel TLR, and discovered a few gems within, going back several months! Remember my early morning mist shoot back in May?. Well look at this blushing beauty, made all sorts of delicious pinks and reds by cross-processing some Fuji Astia slide film in C41 chemicals! Yay!

I became obsessed with this tree, and shot it from about a million different angles (okay, six or so). I really want to go back in the dead of snowy winter, tho it would involve a trek through the woods and down one really steep incline. Here's hoping!

The U.S.Army WWII sea-going tug LT5 sits in the Oswego(NY) harbor at berth in front of the Oswego Marine Museum. This tug is the only one left of its kind...it helped bring the Mulberry ports to France during the D Day invasion of Europe. It also has the distinction of shooting down a German warplane, and the insignia is still painted on the tug.
